Stepping into London for the first time was quite an experience. The city felt enormous, bustling, and full of energy. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimatize to London before starting your journey at Imperial, ensuring you make the most of the city.
Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to the term, here’s the guidance I wish someone had shared with me.
First things first: secure a place to stay
Steer clear of costly hotels by organizing accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The prime options vanish fast! Strive for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line, as lengthy commutes aren’t ideal for early morning classes.
Administrative tasks: taking care of essential matters
Upon your arrival, prioritize these necessities:
- Money transfers – as an international student, identify a trustworthy and budget-friendly method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.
- UK SIM card – navigating a new city is challenging without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan without delay.
- Bank account – certain banks require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID card – this is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and taking advantage of student discounts. Obtain it at your earliest convenience.
Your first week at Imperial is vital
The inaugural week at Imperial is of great importance. It’s when you will connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I built lasting friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society fairs. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Exploring London: travel wisely
During my initial week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to enjoy cheaper rides on the Tube and buses. Walking remains an excellent way to discover and uncover the city’s hidden treasures.
Identify your comforting locations
London can be emotionally intense. Having a go-to place can be beneficial – mine is a nearby park that I visit every day to unwind. My second favorite spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly. Discover your own retreats, whether a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.
And make sure to explore!
Get to know the areas surrounding your campus and home. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred food or coffee spots. Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and meander without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will come from getting a little lost!
Final thoughts before you dive into Imperial student life
- Get a reusable bag – shops impose charges for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t work well in windy conditions.
- Say yes to unconventional events – they can lead to fantastic stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel lost – it’s a common feeling at first.
There’s no need for everything to be planned out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
