Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and dynamic. With only a suitcase and Google Maps at my disposal, I felt a bit lost about where to start. If you’re on the verge of experiencing this, know that it’s okay. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adjusting to your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish your time in the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here’s the counsel I wish I had been given.

First things first: secure your housing

Arrange your accommodation in advance to sidestep costly hotel expenses. I was lucky, but not everyone shares this fortune as the prime options vanish swiftly. Try to find a place close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.

Administrative tasks: organizing essential items

Once you’ve settled in London, tackle these essentials without delay:

  • Money transfers – as an overseas student, discover a dependable and economical method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – acquire one promptly to avoid being stranded without data for navigation.
  • Bank account – some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and friendly for students. Establish an account for routine transactions and part-time job earnings.
  • Student ID card – vital for entering campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Your first week at Imperial matters the most

The initial week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you’ll meet roommates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and organizations and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you feel reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I formed some of my closest friendships during tours and society gatherings. Your opening week lays the groundwork for your university journey.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was memorable, although hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains a fantastic way to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your cozy places

London can be intimidating, especially at first. Having a place to unwind is beneficial – mine is a local park where I go every day to take a breather. The O2, a mere 10 minutes away, is another place I visit weekly to watch films and relax.

Seek out your own preferred spots, be it a café, bookstore, or a riverside bench, where you can unwind and recharge.

And remember to venture out!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to food or coffee spots.

Explore iconic landmarks, enjoy free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and meander aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will stem from getting a little lost!

Final pointers before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life

  • Get a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t suffice in blustery rain.
  • Embrace unusual events – they create wonderful stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s a common sentiment at first.

You don’t have to have every detail sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
