Touching down in London for the first time was quite an experience. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, take heart. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to your new life in London before your journey at Imperial begins, ensuring you relish the excitement of being a newcomer in the city.

Whether you’re landing a few weeks in advance or right before the semester kicks off, here’s the advice I wish had been shared with me upon my arrival.

First off: secure your accommodation

Steer clear of the steep prices of hotels by organizing your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as prime options disappear quickly. Aim to locate a residence close to your campus or along a well-connected Tube line – early morning classes can be challenging if you’re over an hour away.

Administrative essentials: taking care of vital tasks

There are several things to arrange once you land in London:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, you’ll need a dependable and cost-effective means to transfer funds from your country. Services like Wise or Revolut can offer better exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – having internet access is essential for navigation in a new place. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan promptly upon arrival.
  • Bank account – while some banks might need a UK address, digital options like Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Establish a bank account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time work.
  • Student ID card – vital for accessing university facilities, libraries, and enjoying student discounts. Make sure to collect it as early as possible.

Your inaugural week at Imperial is key

Your first week at Imperial is vital to your student experience. It’s the time when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies and enlist in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, strive to engage. I did, and I connected with some of my dearest friends during spontaneous campus tours and society showcases. Your initial week will shape your university journey.

Getting around London: travel wisely

<pDuring my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was a memorable yet disordered experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses more affordably.

Walking remains an excellent way to experience the city and its vibe. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by exploring on foot.

Discover your go-to spots

London can seem daunting, especially at the outset. Having a place of comfort can help – for me, it’s the park near my residence. I go daily to unwind. My second comfort zone is the O2, only 10 minutes away, where I enjoy watching movies weekly.

Identify your own spaces, whether a café, bookstore, or bench by the river, to unwind and recharge. It’s more beneficial than you might realize.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the most frequented areas near your campus and home. Locate your local grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and your favorite eateries or coffee shops.

Visit iconic sites and dedicate weekends to discovering your new city. Check out free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and wander without a specific plan. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting a bit lost!

Final recommendations before plunging into Imperial student life

  • Get a reusable shopping bag – stores often impose a fee for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very effective in gusty conditions.
  • Embrace unusual events – they can lead to captivating stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – everyone goes through that initially.

There’s no need to have everything sorted out on day one. By reading this, you’re already ahead of the game.
