**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my voyage as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had been shy and introverted, plunging headlong into such a fresh and demanding environment was intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time of tremendous personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what have I come to realize, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Fear of Friendship
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate as one of your primary concerns too. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships of my life.
The secret was taking that initial step—starting casual conversations with others who were feeling just as uncertain. Gradually, I found a second family at Imperial, both within my program and throughout the university. One crucial takeaway I’ve had is that being true to yourself is the most effective strategy. With such a varied student community, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values. And if you’re not quite ready to jump in immediately, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others throughout the year.
### Facing Academic Challenges
Adapting to the workload and academic expectations was another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university posed difficulties, and the transition from the first term to the second was even steeper. It can be easy to feel swamped or question your skills, especially when observing others study and wondering if you’re doing enough.
What aided me was realizing that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The most significant lesson I took away from my first year was the importance of asking for help—whether from peers or faculty. Seeking assistance isn’t a sign of inadequacy; it’s an essential skill that will serve you throughout your academic life and after.
### Support from the Materials Department
Regarding support, the faculty in the Materials Science department are exceptional. They truly want students to excel and are understanding of the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open, responding to our concerns and offering direction.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Early on, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster connections with faculty members. This opportunity turned out to be priceless. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary insight? Make the most of the resources and support available to you—you can never have too much help.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university was mostly unwarranted. With a broad array of support options from staff and fellow students alike, there’s always someone available to assist you. I’ve realized that I’m never completely alone, and I’ve found out how to enjoy my time while juggling the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I look ahead, I’m eager to keep evolving, learning, and maximizing my experience at Imperial. To anyone about to begin their university adventure: take that step, be genuine, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ve got this!
