Stepping into London can initially be daunting due to its enormity, clamor, and rhythm. Equipped only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself uncertain of where to start. If you’re venturing on a similar path, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to acclimate to your new life in London before commencing your journey at Imperial, ensuring you relish the city to the fullest.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks prior or just in the nick of time, here’s the counsel I wish I had received when I first arrived.

First order of business: secure a residence

Book your lodging in advance to sidestep expensive hotel expenses. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the prime choices vanish quickly. Target a location close to your campus or along a reliable Tube line to prevent lengthy travels to early morning lectures.

Administrative tasks: sorting out the must-haves

Once you’re in London, focus on these essential tasks:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, utilize applications like Wise or Revolut for economical transfers and favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – vital for connectivity and navigation in a new city. Acquire one right after you arrive.
  • Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and accommodating for students. Open one for daily expenses and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to obtain it without delay.

The inaugural week at Imperial is crucial

Your first week at Imperial plays a critical role in shaping your student experience. It’s when you’ll encounter flatmates, peers, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage with activities that capture your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I did and forged close friendships during campus tours and society tables. Your first week will set the stage for your university adventure.

Exploring London: travel wisely

In my first week, I struggled to comprehend the Tube and bus systems and wound up walking nine kilometers across London. It was a memorable experience, albeit chaotic. Avoid my blunder. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains the optimal way to immerse yourself in the culture of the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be emotionally intense, especially at first. Seek out a comforting space, such as a local park, to unwind and recharge. My alternative respite is the O2, where I de-stress weekly with a film.

Discover your own favorite spots, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or park bench, to help you feel settled in the city.

And make sure to explore!

Acquaint yourself with the commonly frequented areas surrounding campus and your residence. Identify your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee spots.

Check out iconic landmarks, wander through free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for a scenic view, and stroll about aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from getting a bit lost!

Final pointers before diving into Imperial student life

  • Bring along a reusable bag – avoid fees for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are futile against the wind.
  • Participate in unique events – they lead to great anecdotes.
  • Don’t be alarmed if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at first.

You don’t have to have every detail sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I begun at Imperial. Take a deep breath, secure your Oyster card, and commence your London narrative one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
