Stepping into London was quite a lot to handle; the city seemed vast, energetic, and bustling. Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain of where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to savor the city.
Whether you arrive weeks ahead or just in time for term, here’s the guidance I wish I’d been given.
Secure your accommodation
Book a place to stay early to sidestep pricey hotels. I was fortunate, but not everyone has that luck. Opt for housing close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes.
Administrative tasks: must-do activities
When you arrive, tackle these necessities:
- Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide excellent rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one promptly for data and navigation.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. A bank account is vital for transactions and part-time employment.
- Student ID card – necessary for entering campus, utilizing the library, and accessing student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.
Your first week at Imperial: its significance
Your initial week is essential for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover more than 350 clubs and organizations.
Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to get involved. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
In the beginning, I struggled with the Tube and buses, walking nine kilometers to explore. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and an 18+ discount for more affordable travel.
However, walking is still a wonderful way to uncover London’s hidden treasures.
Identify your favorite spots
London can be quite intense. Locate a comforting spot, like a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge.
Discover the city
Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and dining places.
Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and indulge in spontaneous adventures. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering a bit aimlessly.
Final pointers for beginning at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas can’t withstand the wind.
- Attend unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t panic if you feel disoriented; it’s entirely normal at the start.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out from day one. If you’re going through this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey.
