Stepping into London for the first time was a whirlwind. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt at a loss for where to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t fret. Here’s how to kick off your new life in London before starting at Imperial, allowing you to relish the experience of being a newcomer in the city.
Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received when I first got here.
The first step: secure your living arrangement
Book your accommodation as early as possible to avoid pricey hotel costs. I was lucky, but not everyone is, since the best spots get taken fast. Try to find a place close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning classes.
Administrative tasks: addressing the necessary basics
Once you arrive in London, tackle these essentials immediately:
- Money transfers – International students require a cost-effective method to send funds home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Having data is vital for navigating a new city. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan right away.
- Bank account – While some banks may ask for a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and cater well to students. Open an account for day-to-day expenses and part-time job income.
- Student ID card – This is crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
The initial week at Imperial is crucial
Your inaugural week at Imperial plays a significant role in your student experience. It’s when you meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in what piques your interest.
Even if you’re naturally reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I connected with some of my closest friends during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the mood for your university adventure.
Getting around London: travel wisely
During my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was memorable but hectic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses economically.
Walking remains the best method to appreciate the city and its culture. London holds many hidden treasures you’ll uncover through exploration.
Discover your favorite spots
The emotional intensity of London can be daunting at first. Finding a cozy spot provides comfort – mine is a local park I visit daily to unwind. My second spot is the O2, just a short 10-minute walk away, where I enjoy movies weekly to relax.
Identify your own comfort areas, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or bench by the river. These spaces can be more beneficial than you might realize.
And remember to explore!
Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods around your campus and home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to food or coffee spots.
Visit iconic landmarks, check out free museums, and ride a red double-decker bus for the views. Stroll around aimlessly – some of your finest memories will stem from a little wandering!
Final advice before immersing yourself in Imperial student life
- Get a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use ones.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t useful in windy weather.
- Participate in unique events – they often lead to the best stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at first.
You don’t need to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
