By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing

Stepping into London for the first time was intimidating. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If this is your upcoming experience, there’s no need to panic. Here’s how to acclimate to London before diving into your studies at Imperial, enabling you to appreciate the city.

Whether you’re arriving ahead of time or right before the semester starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Your Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotels by organizing lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but good options disappear quickly. Opt for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize travel time for early lectures.

Essential Life Management

Take care of these essentials soon after getting to London:

  • Money transfers: As an international student, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut present favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card: Obtain one right away to prevent getting lost without internet in an unfamiliar place.
  • Bank account: Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and student-friendly. Establish an account for daily expenses and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card: This is vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is critical for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re somewhat reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Getting Around London: Smart Travel

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers through London. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Nevertheless, walking remains an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Locate Your Comfort Zones

London can feel quite overwhelming. Identify a comfort area, like a park, cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and rejuvenate. My comfort zones include a local park and the O2, where I relax weekly.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find your closest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and dining spots. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and relish your time in the city. Some of your most cherished memories will come from wandering a bit off the beaten path.

Final Insights

  • Utilize a reusable bag to steer clear of charges for single-use ones.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t very useful in windy conditions.
  • Join unique events for unforgettable stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s a normal feeling at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
