Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot. The city felt vast, noisy, and fast-moving, and I had no idea where to start with just a suitcase and Google Maps. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before commencing at Imperial, so you can savor your new city life.
Whether you show up weeks in advance or right before the semester begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.
First things first: secure your living arrangements
Lock in your accommodation ahead of time to steer clear of costly hotel stays. I was lucky, but not everyone finds it easy, as the best options vanish quickly. Strive for a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early classes.
Life admin: managing the necessary basics
When you arrive in London, focus on these tasks:
- Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy and economical method for transferring money from home. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – having data is vital for getting around in a new city. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after arriving.
- Bank account – some banks require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and friendly for students. Establish an account for daily transactions and part-time job income.
- Student ID card – this allows access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
The first week at Imperial is essential
Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal for your student experience. It’s when you will meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and register for activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re shy, challenge yourself to take part. I did, and I formed some of my closest friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society events. This week sets the stage for your university journey.
Getting around London: travel wisely
During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or the buses, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.
Walking is also a fantastic way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover your comfort zones
London might be emotionally intense at first. Having a comforting spot helps – mine is the park near my residence. I visit it daily to unwind. My secondary comfort zone is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly.
Identify your own havens, like a café, bookstore, or a riverside bench, to relax and refresh.
And don’t overlook exploring!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and your home. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee locations.
Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and meander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from getting a little lost!
Final pointers before diving into student life at Imperial
- Get a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well against strong winds.
- Embrace unusual events – they lead to fantastic stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone does initially.
You don’t need everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London story one red bus trip and Tesco visit at a time.
