By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing

Stepping into London for the first time was quite an experience. The city felt vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself uncertain about where to start. If this is your situation, take it easy. Here’s some guidance to help you get accustomed to London prior to beginning your time at Imperial, so you can relish your new urban life.

Whether you’re coming weeks in advance or right before the semester begins, here’s what I wish I had been aware of upon my arrival.

Secure Accommodation

To avoid pricey hotel options, arrange your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone experiences that, as the best choices disappear swiftly. Seek a residence close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to make those early morning trips easier.

Key Life Tasks

When you get to London, focus on these important tasks:

  • Transferring funds – as an international student, discover an economical method for transferring money from your home country. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – secure one promptly to ensure you have data for navigation in your new surroundings.
  • Bank account – some banks ask for a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and supportive for students. Open an account for everyday spending and part-time job income.
  • Student ID – this allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as quickly as possible.

Maximize Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital for your experience as a student. You’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re timid, challenge yourself to join in. I found close friends during campus tours and society promotions. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Travel Wisely in London

At first, I struggled to navigate the Tube or buses, resulting in a lengthy nine-kilometer trek across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses affordably. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can sometimes feel emotionally taxing. It’s beneficial to have a go-to spot – mine is a nearby park where I unwind. Another favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy films weekly. Identify your own spaces, such as a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.

Wander Around the City

Get to know the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Find your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locations. Check out iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will arise from aimless exploration.

Final Suggestions for Beginning at Imperial

  • Bring a reusable bag – save yourself from single-use charges.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t stand up to the wind.
  • Participate in unusual activities – they often yield the best stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel a bit lost – it’s perfectly normal at the outset.

You don’t have to have everything figured out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I embarked on my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start weaving your London narrative one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
