Arriving in London for the first time felt overwhelming. The city appeared vast, noisy, and fast-paced. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I was disoriented. If you’re about to face this adventure, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before commencing at Imperial, so you can relish your new city life.

Whether you reach weeks prior or just as the term begins, here’s what I wish I had known during my initial arrival.

Secure accommodation

Avoid spending excessive amounts on hotels; arrange your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is. Prime locations disappear quickly! Aim for somewhere close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.

Key administrative tasks

Address these essentials shortly after landing in London:

  • Money transfers – as an overseas student, discover an economical method to transfer funds from your country. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.
  • UK SIM card – you’ll require data for navigation, so procure a UK SIM card promptly.
  • Bank account – some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – this is essential for gaining entry to campus buildings, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Collect it as soon as possible.

The significance of your initial week at Imperial

Your first week is crucial for your student journey. It’s the time you connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, encourage yourself to take part. I did and formed close friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society fairs. Your initial week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Navigate London wisely

During my first week, I struggled with understanding the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was memorable but chaotic. Avoid my blunder. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable Tube and bus travel.

Walking remains the best way to soak in the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by meandering.

Discover your cozy spots

London can feel intense, particularly at first. A comforting space is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I watch movies weekly for relaxation.

Identify your own spots, like a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to chill out and recharge. It’s more beneficial than you may realize.

Discover the city!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and home. Locate your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee joints.

Explore iconic landmarks. Spend weekends unraveling the city. Visit free museums. Take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the experience. Wander aimlessly. Some of your best memories will emerge from straying a bit!

Final pointers before commencing Imperial life

  • Use a reusable bag – stores usually charge for single-use bags.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective in gusty weather.
  • Participate in unique events – they make for great stories.
  • Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – everyone does initially.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
