Stepping into London for the first time was a staggering experience. The city appeared vast, noisy, and full of energy. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in this situation soon, don’t stress. Here’s some guidance to help you get acclimated to London before commencing at Imperial, enabling you to relish your new urban life.
Whether you arrive weeks ahead or just before the semester begins, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my entry.
Securing Housing
Prevent expensive hotel expenses by organizing your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune since the best choices go quickly. Try to reside close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to make those early morning travels simpler.
Crucial Life Administration
Once in London, swiftly tackle these necessities:
- Money Transfers – International students require an economical means to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide advantageous exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Connectivity is vital for navigating a new city. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after arriving.
- Bank Account Opening – Some banks may need a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and student-friendly. Set up a bank account for everyday transactions and part-time job earnings.
- Student ID Card – This card allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it at the earliest opportunity.
Significance of the Initial Week at Imperial
Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital for your student journey. It’s the moment to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and participate in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you feel reserved, try to engage. I met several of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. The first week lays the foundation for your university experience.
Efficient Travel in London
During my first week, I wasn’t familiar with the Tube or buses, so I trekked nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.
Walking remains an excellent way to soak in the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Locating Comfort Zones
London can be daunting, particularly at first. Having a comfort zone is beneficial. For me, it’s a local park where I visit daily to unwind. My second spot is the O2, just a 10-minute journey away, where I enjoy a movie weekly.
Discover your own places, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.
Discovering the City
Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and home. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred dining or coffee spots.
Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and meander without a fixed plan. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from a little explorative wandering!
Final Advice for Commencing at Imperial
- Bring a reusable bag – retailers impose charges for single-use bags.
- Get a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective in gusty weather.
- Participate in unique events – they frequently yield fantastic stories.
- Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s a typical emotion at the beginning.
You don’t need to have everything sorted from the get-go. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was when I first started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.
