Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and incredibly fast-paced. Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in this situation, rest assured. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before beginning your journey at Imperial, allowing you to fully embrace your new city experience.
Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before classes commence, here’s what I wish I had known upon my arrival.
Secure Accommodation Early
To avoid costly hotel expenses, arrange your accommodation as soon as possible. I was lucky, but that’s not always the case for everyone. The top spots get booked swiftly. Try to reside close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning classes.
Key Administrative Tasks
As soon as you arrive, focus on completing these important tasks:
- Money transfers – as an international student, look for an affordable way to transfer money from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut offer favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one right away to ensure you won’t be lost in a new city without mobile data.
- Bank account – consider digital banks such as Monzo or Starling for quick and student-friendly setups. You’ll require an account for everyday transactions and part-time employment.
- Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and receiving student discounts. Collect it at your earliest convenience.
The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your initial week is vital for your university experience. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you might feel shy, make an effort to partake. I formed close friendships through campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your academic journey.
Smart Travel in London
At first, I struggled to navigate the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable, albeit chaotic, experience. Get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to save on travel expenses. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover hidden treasures throughout the city.
Identify Your Favorite Places
London’s bustling nature can be daunting. Having a go-to place can be comforting. Mine is a local park where I retreat to relax every day. Another favorite is the O2, just a short 10-minute walk away, where I watch movies weekly. Seek out your own spots, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or scenic riverside bench, to unwind.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and where you live. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining spots. Explore iconic landmarks, take advantage of free museums, hop on a double-decker bus, and meander without a specific agenda. Some of your most cherished memories may stem from wandering aimlessly.
Final Advice for Starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to avoid charges on single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas can’t withstand the wind effectively.
- Join unconventional events to create lasting memories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s a common feeling at first.
It’s not necessary to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
