Arriving in London for the very first time was an astonishing experience. The city struck me as vast, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt quite disoriented. If you are about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, so you can relish the city.
Whether you are arriving weeks in advance or right before the term begins, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.
First things first: secure accommodation
Steer clear of the high hotel prices by organizing housing in advance. I had good fortune, but that’s not the case for everyone. The most desirable places fill up quickly! Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line – early morning lectures can be daunting if you’re more than an hour away.
Life admin: taking care of the essentials
Upon arriving in London, tackle these key items promptly:
- Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut offer favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigating an unfamiliar area. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.
- Bank account – certain banks may require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time employment payments.
- Student ID card – this provides access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Obtain it at your earliest opportunity.
The initial week at Imperial is crucial
Your first week at Imperial holds great importance. You will meet flatmates, classmates, and potential lifelong friends. Take advantage of Welcome Week to find out about over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Register for activities that spark your interest.
Even if you feel introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I did, and forged lasting friendships through campus tours and society booths. Your first week lays the groundwork for your entire university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
During my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. While it was an unforgettable experience, it wasn’t the best choice. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses economically.
Walking remains an excellent way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. You may stumble upon hidden gems as you wander.
Discover your comfort zones
London can initially be emotionally taxing. Having a comforting place helps – mine is a local park where I unwind daily. Another is the O2, just a 10-minute distance, where I catch movies weekly.
Seek out your own comforting spots, be it a café, bookstore, or bench by the river. These areas offer a retreat to relax and recharge.
And remember to explore!
Familiarize yourself with your frequently visited areas near campus and your home. Locate your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee shops.
Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the scenery. Sometimes, wandering aimlessly leads to the best memories!
Final tips before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life
- Get a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective in high winds.
- Be open to unusual events – they can yield fantastic stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling initially.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
