By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing
Stepping into London for the first time, I was overwhelmed by its size. The city was bustling, energetic, and somewhat intimidating. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to face this, don’t fret. Here’s how to get your life in London in order before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new experience in the city.
Regardless of whether you’re getting here weeks in advance or right before the semester starts, here’s the guidance I wish someone had shared with me upon my arrival.
Secure your accommodation
Prevent costly hotel stays by arranging your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the top choices vanish quickly. Search for a residence near campus or along a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy travels for early classes.
Essential life tasks to complete
Upon setting foot in London, tackle these essentials:
- Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy, economical method for transferring funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – vital for data and navigation in a new place. Acquire one soon after your arrival.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.
- Student ID card – imperative for campus entry, library access, and obtaining student discounts. Retrieve it without delay.
The significance of your initial week at Imperial
Your first week is pivotal for your student journey. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in what piques your interest.
Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I formed strong friendships during campus tours and society presentations. Your first week sets the foundation for your university experience.
Smart travel in London
Initially, I found the Tube and buses confusing and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but chaotic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel at a lower cost on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains a fantastic way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify your comfort zones
London can feel daunting. Having a relaxing spot is beneficial – mine is a nearby park. I go there daily to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy a movie each week.
Discover your personal comfort zones, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside bench, to relax and recharge.
Discover the city
Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and home. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.
Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a double-decker bus, and meander without a specific plan. Some of your best memories will arise from wandering a bit off course.
Final advice for starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – shops charge for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective in windy weather.
- Participate in unique events – they create great stories.
- Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – it’s a normal feeling at the beginning.
You don’t have to have it all sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
