Stepping into London for the first time can be quite daunting due to its size and speed. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself unsure of where to start. If this resonates with you, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before beginning your journey at Imperial, so you can savor the city.
Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the term starts, here’s the counsel I wish I had received.
Prioritize Accommodation
Prevent hefty hotel expenses by securing accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone has that experience. Look for a location close to campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early morning classes.
Crucial Life Admin
As soon as you arrive, take care of these vital tasks:
- Money transfers – International students require economical options for sending money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.
- UK SIM card – Necessary for data usage and navigation. Obtain one right away.
- Bank account – Online banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Open an account for daily spending and earnings from part-time jobs.
- Student ID card – Allows access to campus amenities, libraries, and various discounts. Acquire it without delay.
Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your initial week is important for connecting with flatmates, peers, and new friends. Take part in Welcome Week to check out different clubs and societies. Even if you are reserved, engaging in activities can lead to lasting relationships.
Travel Wisely in London
At first, I walked nine kilometers around London due to my lack of knowledge regarding public transport. Prevent this by getting a Student Oyster card and claiming the 18+ discount for less expensive travel. However, walking remains a wonderful way to see the city.
Identify Comfort Zones
London can be a lot to handle. Locate a comfort area, such as a park, cafe, or bookstore, where you can unwind and recharge. These places are essential for your mental health.
Discover the City
Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate local shops, pharmacies, parks, and restaurants. Explore landmarks, museums, and embrace spontaneous adventures for unforgettable moments.
Essential Tips for Beginning at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees associated with single-use bags.
- Consider purchasing a waterproof jacket for rainy conditions.
- Participate in unconventional events for unique encounters.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented at first; it’s completely normal.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out right away. If you are reading this, you’re already making great progress. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one step at a time.
