Arriving in London for the first time, the city appeared vast. The sounds, rhythm, and sheer scale were daunting. With a suitcase in one hand and Google Maps in the other, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament soon, don’t fret. Here’s my guidance for acclimating to your new life in London prior to beginning at Imperial, so you can genuinely relish the experience of being a newcomer in the city.

Whether you show up a few weeks early or just before the semester kicks off, here’s the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First priority: secure housing

Evade the steep hotel prices by organizing your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone is, since the best options get snapped up fast. Try to find a place near your campus or at least close to a reliable Tube line – those early morning lectures can be challenging if you live over an hour away.

Life admin: managing the essentials

Upon your arrival in London, there are a few essentials to tackle without delay:

  • Handling finances – as an international student, you’ll need a dependable and cost-effective way to transfer money from your home country. Apps such as Wise or Revolut assisted me in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.
  • Acquiring a UK SIM card – without data, navigating directions will be challenging, which isn’t ideal in an unfamiliar location. Get a UK SIM card and data plan as soon as you arrive.
  • Opening a bank account – some banks need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Establish a bank account promptly for daily transactions and any part-time income.
  • Obtaining your student ID card – this is essential for entering campus buildings, libraries, and receiving student discounts at various locations. Secure your student ID card as soon as possible.

The significance of your first week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital to your student experience. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and register for activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, encourage yourself to join in. I did, and I made some of my closest friends during random campus tours and society booths. Your first week at Imperial establishes the groundwork for your university experience.

Travel wisely in London

During my inaugural week, I didn’t grasp the Tube or buses, so I walked nine kilometers across London to explore. It was chaotic yet unforgettable – but don’t emulate my example. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses more economically.

That said, walking remains the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. You’ll stumble upon hidden treasures in London just by meandering about.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be emotionally overwhelming, particularly at first. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – for me, it’s the park near my home. I visit daily to breathe and reset. My second comfort area is the O2, just ten minutes from home, where I watch movies weekly to relax.

Discover your personal spots that provide comfort in the sprawling city, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. Having a place to unwind and reset is more valuable than you may realize.

Be sure to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and home. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite spots for food or coffee.

The iconic landmarks deserve a visit too. Spend weekends exploring your new city. Visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the view, and wander aimlessly. Some of your best memories will arise from getting a little lost!

Final tips before embracing Imperial student life

  • Utilize a reusable bag – supermarkets and shops often charge for disposable ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t be adequate when it’s windy.
