Stepping into London for the first time was a bit daunting. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar boat, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new London life prior to starting at Imperial, allowing you to savor your time in the city.
Whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or just on the eve of term, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.
First things first: secure accommodation
Arrange your living situation early to bypass costly hotel bookings. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the top choices get snapped up quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for morning lectures.
Life admin: organizing necessary essentials
Upon getting to London, give priority to these tasks:
- Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from home. Options like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- Acquire a UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigating a new city. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you arrive.
- Establish a bank account – certain banks need a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. You’ll require an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
- Obtain your student ID card – it’s vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Pick it up as soon as you can.
The first week at Imperial is essential
Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal for your student experience. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led groups and societies and enroll in activities that interest you.
Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to join in. I did and encountered some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the mood for your university journey.
Getting around London: travel wisely
During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London to explore. It was memorable yet chaotic. Avoid my blunder by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains a fantastic way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify your comfort zones
London can initially feel emotionally taxing. Having a familiar spot helps – mine is a local park where I go to unwind. Another is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I watch films weekly to relax.
Seek out your own comforting places, whether it be a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These locations can offer a necessary retreat.
And remember to explore!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you will frequently visit near campus and home. Discover the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your favorite dining or coffee spots.
Tour famous landmarks, visit free museums, and ride a classic red double-decker bus for the views. Some of your most cherished memories will come from a little unplanned wandering!
Final advice before diving into Imperial student life
- Bring a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective against rain driven by wind.
- Participate in unique events – they typically generate the best stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s common at the beginning.
You don’t need to have everything figured out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.
