**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and private, plunging into this new phase felt quite challenging. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve absorbed and how far I’ve advanced.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was forging friendships. If you are a prospective student reading this, you might share similar sentiments. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes began, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known.

The pivotal moment occurred when I chose to take incremental steps—striking up casual chats with those who were experiencing the same feelings as I was. Gradually, those minor exchanges evolved into significant friendships. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, all starting from that first leap of faith.

If I’ve gleaned anything, it’s that stepping out of your comfort zone at the beginning of the year pays off. Even if you don’t feel prepared, have no fear—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Facing Academic Obstacles

Another substantial challenge was adjusting to the demands and heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more difficult. It’s quite easy to feel overwhelmed or question your abilities when you observe others studying and ponder whether you’re measuring up.

What aided me in managing these difficulties was the acknowledgment that I wasn’t alone. Everyone was grappling with comparable challenges, and if I found something perplexing, it’s likely that others did too. The key takeaway here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or academic staff, reaching out for help can be transformative.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and tutors truly desire for students to thrive and empathize with the obstacles we encounter. They keep open lines of communication throughout the year and are always willing to respond to our inquiries.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the support available to me until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of my best choices. It allowed me to connect with staff members and gain a deeper understanding of the resources accessible to students. Whether through formal positions or informal conversations, forging relationships with the faculty is invaluable. My suggestion? Fully leverage the support systems available—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to embarking on my university journey and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the backing of friends, faculty, and the broader university community, those concerns became manageable.

This year has illuminated the fact that I’m never truly alone, even amid stressful times like exams and deadlines. It has also taught me how to strike a balance between diligent work and enjoyment, allowing me to savor my university experience fully.

To anyone on the cusp of starting their own journey, know that feeling apprehensive is completely normal. Take those bold steps, embrace the obstacles, and don’t shy away from seeking assistance. You’ll emerge stronger, more self-assured, and with cherished memories for a lifetime.
