Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to fret. Here’s my guidance to help you adjust to your new life in London before kicking off your journey at Imperial, ensuring you make the most of your time in the city.
Whether you’re arriving a few weeks ahead of time or just right before classes commence, here’s the insight I wish someone had shared with me.
Secure your accommodation
Book your living arrangements early to sidestep costly hotel rates. I was fortunate, but not everyone has that luck, as the top choices vanish quickly. Seek a location close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to avoid extended commutes for those early lectures.
Life management: addressing the basics
Once you arrive in London, tackle these necessities promptly:
- Money transfers – as an international student, find a secure and cost-effective method to send money back home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one swiftly to access data and navigation in a new environment.
- Bank account – digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time employment payments.
- Student ID card – vital for entering campus facilities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as you can.
The initial week at Imperial is essential
Your initial week at Imperial is crucial for shaping your student experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and future acquaintances. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and immerse yourself in topics that interest you.
Even if you’re more reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I forged significant friendships during campus tours and society fairs. Your first week lays the foundation for your university adventure.
Getting around London: be smart with travel
In my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. It was memorable yet turbulent. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.
Walking remains a fantastic way to discover the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by strolling about.
Identify your comfort zones
London might feel overwhelming at first. Designating a comfort location is beneficial – for me, it’s a nearby park where I regularly go to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute distance, is another beloved spot where I enjoy a weekly movie.
Discover your own places, such as a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and rejuvenate.
Discover the city!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you visit most frequently around campus and your home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to food or coffee spots.
Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, hop on a double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will stem from getting slightly lost!
Last bits of advice before jumping into Imperial student life
- Utilize a reusable bag – shops frequently impose charges for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can fail in windy conditions.
- Participate in unconventional events – they can lead to great stories.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience at the beginning.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
