By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing
Stepping foot in London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t stress. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before your time at Imperial begins, ensuring you can savor the city.
Whether you arrive well in advance or just before the semester starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had gotten.
Secure Housing
Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares the same fate. The best options disappear quickly! Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.
Essential Life Tasks
When you arrive, make these tasks a priority:
- Money transfers – As an international student, discover an economical way to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Secure one as soon as possible for data and navigation in your new surroundings.
- Bank account – Digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and friendly to students. Open an account for routine transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – This is vital for accessing campus resources, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it at the earliest opportunity.
The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your inaugural week is crucial for your student experience. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and prospective friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and enroll in activities that catch your interest.
Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to join in. I did and found some of my best friends during campus tours and society events. This week establishes the mood for your university adventure.
Smart Travel in London
During my first week, I trekked nine kilometers through London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically.
Walking is still a fantastic way to navigate the city and unearth hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can be emotionally intense. Finding a comforting place is beneficial – for me, it’s a nearby park where I go each day to wind down. The O2, only 10 minutes away, is another favorite for movies and relaxation.
Seek out your own havens like a café, bookstore, or riverside bench to unwind and recharge.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequently visit near campus and home. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots.
Explore iconic landmarks, enjoy free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and roam without a clear plan. Some of your best memories will stem from getting a bit lost!
Final Advice Before Beginning at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas don’t work well in the wind.
- Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at the start.
You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I entered Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco run at a time.
