**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was consumed by a whirlwind of apprehension, trepidation, and uncertainty as I geared up to embark on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging headlong into this new phase felt overwhelmingly intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with development, trials, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can recognize just how much I’ve acquired and how far I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might resonate with that—it’s a common concern. On my inaugural day in student housing, just a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day ensconced in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. These connections have turned into my second family here at Imperial, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversation with others who were just as anxious as I was.
So, what did I learn? The secret is to make that leap early on, even if it feels awkward. If you’re not quite ready immediately, don’t panic—there will be a host of icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most critically, be your authentic self. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and heightened difficulty of the curriculum. The transition from A-levels to university was apparent, and the shift between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re on track.
What aided me was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re finding something tough to grasp, it’s likely that others are as well. The most vital lesson I took away in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from peers or faculty.
### Aid from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, the assistance within the Materials Science and Engineering department has been remarkable. The lecturers and staff genuinely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we confront. They maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year, addressing our concerns and providing direction.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold moves I made at the start of the year, and it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to foster relationships with faculty members, which proved invaluable. There are various ways to connect with staff, and I wholeheartedly recommend seizing these opportunities. The support available to you exists for a purpose—don’t hesitate to utilize it!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on this year, I’ve come to understand that much of the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. There are numerous support systems available, from staff to fellow students, ready to help you navigate various challenges. I’ve recognized that I’m never truly isolated, and I’ve learned to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and laughter.
This year has been a journey of maturation, and I’m thankful for the experiences that have shaped my character. To anyone preparing to embark on their own university journey: take the plunge, embrace the challenges, and remember to relish the experience.
