Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing
Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to process. The metropolis appeared immense, noisy, and frenetic. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you are about to go through this experience, don’t fret. Here’s my guidance to assist you in settling down before commencing your time at Imperial, ensuring you embrace your new life in the city.
No matter if you come weeks ahead of schedule or right before the semester begins, here’s the advice I wish had been shared with me.
Secure Housing
Steer clear of pricey hotel expenses by arranging accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone has that luck. The top choices get taken quickly, so aim for a residence close to your campus or an accessible Tube line to minimize long travels for early classes.
Important Life Administration
Upon arriving in London, tackle these key tasks without delay:
- Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy, cost-effective method for transferring funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – data is essential for navigation. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you land.
- Bank account – while some banks ask for a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Open an account for your daily expenses and part-time job earnings.
- Student ID card – this is essential for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week is vital for shaping your student journey. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you are introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I forged lasting friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Getting Around London
In my initial week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for economical travel. Walking remains the finest method to discover and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can feel intense. Seek out a place of comfort, whether it’s a park, café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and rejuvenate. For me, it’s the park nearby my home and the O2 for movies.
Discover the City
Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your residence. Find grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining spots. Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, take a ride on a double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished experiences will arise from getting slightly lost.
Last-Minute Recommendations
- Carry a reusable bag – retailers impose charges for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas fail in windy conditions.
- Join quirky events – they make for great anecdotes.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at first.
You don’t need to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
