Upon my initial arrival in London, the city’s expanse was both stunning and daunting. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need to fret. Here are tips on how to acclimate to London before commencing your studies at Imperial, ensuring you appreciate the city.

No matter if you arrive early or just prior to the semester, here’s the guidance I wish I had been given.

Secure Accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotels by organizing your living situation in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Search for housing close to campus or along a reliable Tube route to minimize commute times.

Necessary Life Admin

Address these vital matters shortly after your arrival:

  • Money transfers – Utilize platforms like Wise or Revolut for cost-effective international transfers.
  • UK SIM card – Acquire one right away for data access and navigation.
  • Bank account – Digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly.
  • Student ID card – This provides entry to campus amenities and discounts.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

The first week is vital for networking and diving into clubs. Participate in Welcome Week events to forge connections.

Smart Travel in London

Avoid my error of trekking long distances. Obtain a Student Oyster card for travel savings. Walking remains a lovely way to uncover secret spots.

Identify Comfort Zones

London can be intense. Identify a comforting place like a park, cafe, or bookstore to unwind and recharge.

Explore the City

Investigate your neighborhood and iconic sites. Check out museums, hop aboard a double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly for unforgettable experiences.

Final Recommendations

  • Bring a reusable bag to bypass extra charges.
  • Purchase a waterproof coat for blustery days.
  • Join in on unique events for memorable stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; this is common.

You needn’t have everything sorted instantly. If you’re perusing this, you’re already ahead of where I stood. Take a deep breath, secure your Oyster card, and embark on your adventure in London.
