Entering London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and buzzing with energy. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to go through this experience, there’s no need to worry. Here’s how to kickstart your new life in London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to truly enjoy the city.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before classes begin, here’s the guidance I wish I had when I first arrived.

First and foremost: secure your living arrangements

Prevent expensive hotel bills by arranging accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The best places are snatched up quickly! Aim for housing close to your campus or on a convenient Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early morning classes.

Admin essentials: getting the basics sorted

Once you’re in London, promptly take care of these essentials:

  • Money transfers – International students require a safe, cost-effective method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Data is crucial for getting around. Obtain a UK SIM card along with a data plan shortly after your arrival.
  • Bank account – Certain banks may ask for a UK address, however, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and accommodate students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job salary deposits.
  • Student ID card – This is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and enjoying student discounts. Acquire it at your earliest convenience.

Your initial week at Imperial is key

Your inaugural week at Imperial holds great significance. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-operated clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society stalls. This week paves the way for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

In my first week, I covered nine kilometers traversing London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. It was an unforgettable yet hectic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses. Walking also allows you to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Identify your soothing spots

London can feel overwhelming at times. Having a go-to comfort space is beneficial – mine is a park close by where I unwind daily. My second favorite is the O2, just a 10-minute journey away, where I enjoy watching movies weekly. Discover your own go-to spots, like a cafe or a bookstore, to chill and recharge.

And remember to discover!

Familiarize yourself with the surrounding areas near your campus and home. Locate the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred eateries. Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will stem from the adventures of getting slightly lost!

Final pieces of advice before diving into Imperial student life

  • Carry a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for disposable bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very effective against the wind.
  • Join unique events – they lead to wonderful stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was when I began my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
