Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city felt vast, noisy, and moved at a rapid pace. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I wasn’t sure how to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to London before your studies at Imperial, so you can enjoy your new urban life.

Whether you come weeks in advance or just before classes begin, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Accommodation

Book your housing early to prevent the need for pricey hotel stays. I got lucky, but not everyone does, as the best options disappear quickly. Look for a place close to your campus or an accessible Tube line to lessen long journeys to morning lectures.

Important Administrative Tasks

When you get to London, make sure to tackle these tasks:

  • Money Transfers: As an international student, seek a trustworthy and budget-friendly method to send money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.
  • Obtain a UK SIM Card: Acquire one right away to avoid being lost without data in an unfamiliar area.
  • Open a Bank Account: Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodate students well. Create an account for everyday transactions and part-time earnings.
  • Acquire a Student ID Card: This is essential for accessing campus buildings, libraries, and receiving student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society events. This week sets the foundation for your university life.

Smart Travel in London

At first, I was confused by the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across the city. Instead, get your Student Oyster card and sign up for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains a wonderful way to explore and uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Discover Your Cozy Spots

London can be daunting, so identify a comforting place. For me, it’s a nearby park and the O2 for films. Find your own retreats, like a cafe or bookstore, to unwind and recharge.

Explore the City

Get to know the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Pinpoint your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite restaurants. Check out iconic landmarks, museums, and relish spontaneous strolls. Some of your finest experiences will arise from getting a bit lost!

Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial

  • Use a reusable bag to evade fees for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas struggle against the wind.
  • Attend unconventional events for unforgettable memories.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel lost; it’s a normal part of the process initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
