Landing in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city seemed massive, noisy, and incredibly fast-paced. With only a suitcase and Google Maps for guidance, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance that can assist you in acclimating to London before your journey begins at Imperial, ensuring you relish your new urban life.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just shortly before classes commence, here’s the counsel I wish I had received during my arrival.

Secure Your Accommodation First

Sidestep costly hotel stays by obtaining your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not always the case. The top choices vanish swiftly! Aim for a residence close to campus or on a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for those early morning lectures.

Key Life Administration

When you arrive, focus on these crucial tasks:

  • Money transfers – As an international scholar, discover a budget-friendly method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Acquire one right away for data and navigation in your new environment.
  • Bank account – Certain banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. Open an account for regular transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – Vital for accessing campus, utilizing the library, and benefitting from student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as possible.

The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial holds great importance. It’s the time when you meet flatmates, classmates, and possible friends. Get involved in Welcome Week activities, check out over 350 student organizations and clubs, and engage in what piques your interest.

Even if you consider yourself shy, challenge yourself to take part. I did, and I met wonderful friends during campus tours and society events. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Navigate London Efficiently

At first, I found the Tube and buses baffling, leading me to walk nine kilometers through London. It was an unforgettable experience but rather hectic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel at a lower cost on public transport.

Nonetheless, wandering around is still a fantastic way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover Your Relaxation Spots

London can feel emotionally taxing. Having a favorite spot to retreat to is beneficial – mine is a local park that I visit every day to unwind. My second favorite place is the O2, just ten minutes away, where I enjoy a film weekly.

Identify your own soothing locations, be it a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These spots can provide unexpected solace.

Discover the City

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred dining or coffee spots.

Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and experience a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering a bit off the beaten path!

Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial

  • Utilize a reusable bag – Retailers frequently charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas are not very effective in windy conditions.
  • Join atypical events – They lead to fantastic narratives.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – That’s perfectly normal at the beginning.

It’s not necessary to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
