Stepping foot in London for the very first time was a lot to handle. The city appeared vast, noisy, and fast-moving. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re on the verge of this experience, don’t fret. Here are some pointers to help you acclimate to London before kicking off at Imperial, allowing you to savor your new city life.
Whether you’re coming in weeks ahead of time or just before term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.
Secure Accommodation
Prevent costly hotel expenses by organizing your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the prime spots get taken quickly. Search for something within close proximity to campus or near a dependable Tube line to steer clear of lengthy commutes for those early classes.
Administrative Essentials
Upon your arrival in London, focus on these priorities:
- Money Transfers – As an overseas student, identify a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Tools like Wise or Revolut can assist in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Ensure you have data for navigation by obtaining a UK SIM card at the earliest opportunity.
- Bank Account – Some financial institutions necessitate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID Card – This is key for gaining access to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it swiftly.
Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that resonate with you.
Even if you’re somewhat reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your initial week will set the stage for your university journey.
Getting Around London: Smart Travel
During my first week, I misunderstood the Tube and buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.
Walking remains an excellent way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can feel emotionally taxing, particularly initially. Having a comforting place is beneficial – mine is a park close to my residence. I visit it daily to relax. My secondary spot is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly.

Familiarize yourself with your new environment near campus and home. Locate your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locales.
Explore iconic sites, check out free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and roam aimlessly. Some of your finest memories will stem from wandering off the beaten path!
Final Recommendations Before Joining Imperial
- Acquire a reusable bag – shops impose charges for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t hold up against the wind.
- Participate in unique events – they make for great tales.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s completely normal initially.
