Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and full of activity. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to embark on this experience, there’s no need to fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to your new life in London before commencing your studies at Imperial, allowing you to savor the city.

No matter if you’re arriving weeks ahead of time or right as the term kicks off, here’s what I wish I had been aware of when I first arrived.

Secure accommodation

Prevent pricey hotel bills by sorting out your living arrangements ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The most desirable places vanish quickly, so target a residence near your campus or a dependable Tube line to keep your commute to morning lectures manageable.

Key administrative tasks

Once you’re in London, give priority to these items:

  • Money remittances – as an international student, find a trustworthy and budget-friendly method to receive funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data and navigation in your new area.
  • Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and user-friendly for students, vital for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – this is essential for utilizing campus amenities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Acquire it as soon as you can.

Significance of the inaugural week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is pivotal. It’s your chance to meet flatmates, classmates, and prospective friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies, immersing yourself in your interests.

Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to join in. I pushed myself to do so, which led to friendships formed during spontaneous campus tours and society events. This week lays the groundwork for your university journey.

Smart travel in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, which resulted in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable experience but quite overwhelming. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel inexpensively on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains a wonderful way to discover and uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be emotionally daunting, particularly at the beginning. A comforting location is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, a mere 10-minute distance, where I relax watching a film each week.

Identify your own havens, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to recharge and refresh.

Find your way around the city

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and your residence. Identify the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and your favorite eating or coffee locations.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will stem from wandering aimlessly.

Final advice before embarking on life at Imperial

  • Bring a reusable bag – shops typically charge for single-use ones.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t hold up in the wind.
  • Participate in unique events – they will provide fantastic stories.
  • Don’t fret if you’re feeling disoriented – it’s perfectly normal at the start.

You are not required to have everything sorted on day one. If you are reading this, you are already ahead of where I started. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
