When I touched down in London, the city appeared vast, noisy, fast-paced, and somewhat daunting. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was completely unsure of where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to life in London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to appreciate the city.

Whether you show up a few weeks early or right before the term kicks off, here’s what I wish I had been aware of when I initially arrived.

**Secure Accommodation**
Dodge pricey hotels by sorting out your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the best options vanish quickly. Seek something near campus or along a reliable Tube line to prevent long commutes for early morning classes.

**Administrative Matters: Key Things to Address**
Upon your arrival in London, tackle these key matters without delay:

– Currency Transfers: As an international student, discover a trustworthy method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
– UK SIM Card: Obtain one right away to avoid being stranded without data.
– Banking: Establish a bank account promptly for routine transactions and part-time employment. Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and suited for students.
– Student ID Card: Essential for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as you can.

**Your Initial Week at Imperial**
The first week is key for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I forged lasting friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

**Getting Around London: Travel Wisely**
During my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London due to confusion regarding the Tube and buses. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel expenses. However, walking remains a fantastic way to uncover and explore hidden treasures.

**Discover Your Go-To Spots**
London can be intense, so identify a spot that brings you comfort. For me, it’s the park near my residence and the O2 for films. Find your own favorite places, such as a cafe or bookstore, to unwind and recharge.

**Explore the City**
Familiarize yourself with the vicinity surrounding your campus and home. Locate supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and cherished dining establishments. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and embrace what the city offers. Some of your fondest memories will arise from aimless exploration.

**Essential Tips Before Starting at Imperial**
– Use a reusable bag to avoid fees associated with single-use bags.
– Purchase a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas often fail in windy conditions.
– Attend unique events for memorable experiences.
– Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; this is normal at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted from day one. By reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure, one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
