Landing in London was an intense experience for me. The city felt vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t fret. Here’s my guidance to help you adjust to life in London before you begin your journey at Imperial, allowing you to fully enjoy your new city experience.

Whether you arrive a few weeks in advance or just right before classes start, here’s the counsel I wish I had been given.

Prioritize Finding Accommodation

To sidestep pricey hotel costs, secure your accommodation early on. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime options fill up fast. Aim to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early lectures.

Key Life Administrative Tasks

After arriving in London, make these tasks a priority:

  • Money Transfers – As an international student, look for an affordable method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM Card – Acquire one promptly to ensure you have data for navigation in your new environment.
  • Bank Account Creation – While some banks require a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer quick and student-friendly options. You’ll need an account for everyday transactions and receiving part-time job payments.
  • Student ID Card – This is crucial for entering campus buildings, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Make sure to collect it as early as possible.

Maximize Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out more than 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to join in; I made close friends during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Navigate London Wisely

At first, I couldn’t grasp the Tube or bus systems and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. Learn from my mistake by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel expenses. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city and its secrets.

Locate Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally taxing. Having a comforting location is beneficial; mine is a local park where I unwind daily. My alternate spot is the O2, just a 10-minute distance, where I enjoy weekly movie viewings. Discover your own spaces, like a café or bookstore, for relaxation.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with your new area, including nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries. Tour iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from aimless exploration.

Final Advice for Joining Imperial

  • Utilize a reusable bag to evade charges for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas won’t hold up well in windy weather.
  • Attend unique events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Do not worry if you feel confused; it’s quite normal initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was when I commenced at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
