By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing

Stepping into London was a whirlwind; the city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about how to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, relax. Here’s how to acclimate to London before beginning your journey at Imperial, so you can truly relish your new urban life.

Whether you come weeks in advance or just right before the semester begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.

Secure Your Accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotel expenses by sorting out your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone enjoys the same fortune, as the prime options vanish swiftly. Try to find a place close to your campus or a well-connected Tube line to minimize lengthy travels for early morning classes.

Administrative Essentials

Once you arrive, address these important matters:

  • Currency Transfers – As an international student, discover a trustworthy and economical method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide attractive exchange rates.
  • UK SIM Card – Acquire a UK SIM card with data promptly to prevent getting lost without navigation in an unfamiliar city.
  • Bank Account – Some banks may need a UK address, yet digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job earnings.
  • Student ID – This card allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Secure it as soon as possible.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is critical for shaping your student journey. Meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to join in. I formed lasting friendships during casual campus tours and society events. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Getting Around London: Travel Wisely

During my first week, I walked nine kilometers across London due to confusion regarding the Tube and buses. It was an unforgettable but hectic experience. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares. Walking remains the best way to soak in the city and discover its hidden treasures.

Discover Your Relaxation Spots

London can be emotionally intense, particularly at the start. Identify a comforting place, like a park, café, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to unwind and recharge. My go-to spots include a local park and the O2, where I regularly de-stress with a film.

Get to Know London

Become acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for scenic views. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering around a bit.

Essential Tips for Starting at Imperial

  • Bring a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use options.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas won’t cut it in windy weather.
  • Participate in unusual events to create unforgettable stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s perfectly normal initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already steps ahead of where I stood when I first arrived at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and kick off your London adventure one bus trip and Tesco visit at a time.
