Stepping foot in London for the very first time was an exhilarating experience. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain of where to start. If you’re about to dive into this, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, so you can embrace the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First Priority: Find Accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotel fees by securing accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that experience. The prime choices vanish quickly! Strive for a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line, as lengthy commutes for early classes can be challenging.

Key Life Administration

As soon as you land in London, tackle these essentials without delay:

  • Money transfers – As an international student, discover a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Navigating an unfamiliar city is hard without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan promptly after your arrival.
  • Bank account establishment – Some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. Create an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – This is crucial for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as quickly as you can.

Imperial’s Initial Week is Significant

The first week at Imperial is crucial for your experience as a student. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to join in. I did and encountered some of my closest friends during campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.

Smart Navigation in London

During my initial week, I didn’t grasp the Tube or buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus travel.

Walking remains an excellent way to absorb the city’s culture and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally intense at first. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a local park where I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I relax with a movie weekly.

Identify your own places, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These spots provide a much-needed escape.

Explore the City!

Familiarize yourself with the frequently visited areas surrounding campus and your home. Locate the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your favorite food or coffee venues.

Visit notable landmarks, explore free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your finest memories will stem from getting a little lost!

Final Tips Before Fully Engaging in Imperial Life

  • Carry a reusable bag – Shops often levy charges for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas aren’t effective against windy conditions.
  • Participate in unusual events – They create fantastic stories.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – It’s common at the onset.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you are already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London narrative one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
