By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing

Arriving in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re facing a similar scenario, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in settling down and embracing your new life in London before commencing at Imperial.

Regardless of whether you come weeks in advance or just right before the semester begins, here’s the information I wish I had when I first set foot here.

Secure accommodation

It’s advisable to organize your lodging early to steer clear of pricey hotel expenses. I was lucky, but not everyone shares the same fortune. Search for a residence close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line, since lengthy travels can be challenging for early morning classes.

Essential tasks in life administration

Once you’re in London, make these tasks a priority:

  • Money transfers – International students need a dependable method for transferring their funds. Apps such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Obtain one swiftly for data access and navigation.
  • Bank account – Digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick to join and are accommodating for students. Open an account for managing transactions and receiving part-time work payments.
  • Student ID card – This is vital for access to campus, libraries, and discounts for students. Make sure to collect it without delay.

Your initial week at Imperial

The first week is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to join in. I found close friends during random campus tours and society booths. This week will shape your university experience.

Smart travel in London

During my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London due to misunderstandings with the Tube and buses. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for lower travel costs. Walking is also an excellent method to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Locate comforting spots

London can feel intense. Identify a comforting location, such as a park, cafe, or bookstore, to decompress and recharge. My personal favorites include a local park and the O2, where I relax on a weekly basis.

Discover the city

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Uncover nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite restaurants. Visit notable landmarks, free museums, and take spontaneous strolls. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from moments of getting a bit lost.

Final advice for starting at Imperial

  • Utilize a reusable bag to avoid costs associated with single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas can be ineffective in windy conditions.
  • Consider attending unconventional events for memorable experiences.
  • Feeling disoriented is perfectly normal at first; don’t let it worry you.

You don’t have to have everything figured out from the start. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
