Arriving in London for the very first time was a lot to handle. The city appeared enormous, loud, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s some advice to assist you in acclimating to London prior to beginning your journey at Imperial, allowing you to enjoy the thrill of being a newcomer in the city.
Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the term kicks off, here’s the advice I wish I had received when I arrived.
First Step: Arrange Housing
Prevent expensive hotel costs by securing your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the finest spots get booked quickly. Try to find a place near your campus or a dependable Tube line to dodge long commutes for early classes.
Crucial Administrative Tasks
When you arrive in London, swiftly take care of these key tasks:
- Money transfers – as an international student, discover an affordable method to move money from home. Apps like Wise or Revolut present favorable rates.
- UK SIM card – make sure you have data for navigation by obtaining a UK SIM card right away.
- Setting up a bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and tailored for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – obtain this to gain access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts.
Significance of the First Week at Imperial
Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your student journey. It’s an opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and engage in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re introverted, strive to get involved. I did, and I made close friends during campus tours and society fairs. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Smart Transportation in London
During my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London due to confusion regarding the Tube and buses. It was memorable but chaotic. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for economical Tube and bus travel.
Walking remains an excellent method to explore the city’s hidden treasures and culture.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
Initially, London can feel emotionally overwhelming. Discovering a comfort zone can be helpful – mine is a nearby park where I go each day to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute walk away, is another spot I enjoy for relaxing with a movie.
Find your own favorite places, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to help you de-stress and recharge.
Wander and Discover
Get familiar with commonly visited locations around campus and your residence. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.
Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a double-decker bus for the scenic views, and roam around without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from getting a bit lost!
Final Pointers Before Immersing in Imperial Life
- Utilize a reusable bag to dodge charges for single-use ones.
- Get a waterproof jacket since umbrellas are ineffective in windy conditions.
- Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t stress if you feel out of place at first – it’s perfectly normal.
You don’t have to have everything figured out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. So, take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
