Touching down in London for the first time was a captivating experience. The city felt enormous, bustling, and hectic. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t stress. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to your new life in London before your journey at Imperial begins, ensuring you can savor the city.
Whether you arrive weeks early or right before the term kicks off, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my entry.
Top Priority: Find Housing
Steer clear of costly hotel stays by organizing your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as prime choices get snapped up quickly. Try to secure a spot close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for morning lectures.
Essential Life Setup
Upon your arrival in London, tackle these key tasks swiftly:
- Money transfers – As an international student, seek a trustworthy and economical method to send money from home. Tools like Wise or Revolut provide attractive exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Lacking data makes it tough to navigate a new locale. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after you arrive.
- Bank account opening – Some banks need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Create an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – This is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.
The First Week at Imperial is Key
Your initial week at Imperial is crucial for your student journey. It’s the opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and join those that catch your interest.
Even if you’re shy, make an effort to get involved. I did, and I met several of my closest pals during campus tours and society stands. This week sets the foundation for your university experience.
Smart Travel in London
During my first week, I was clueless about the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses affordably.
Regardless, walking remains the best way to soak in the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by wandering about.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
Initially, London can feel emotionally intense. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is the park near my home. I frequent it daily to unwind. My other spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I watch films weekly.
Seek out your spots, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These havens provide relaxation and a reset amid the city’s bustle.
Discover the City
Become familiar with the areas you’ll frequently visit around campus and home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to food or coffee spots.
Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the views, and roam without a plan. Some of your best moments will stem from getting a bit lost!
Final Thoughts Before Diving into Imperial Life
- Bring a reusable bag – Shops typically charge for single-use ones.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas are useless against wind-driven rain.
- Join unique events – They create the best stories.
- Don’t panic if you feel lost – It’s completely normal in the beginning.
You don’t need to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I first joined Imperial. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
