Stepping foot in London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling with activity. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to panic. Here are my suggestions to help you acclimatize to London before beginning your journey at Imperial, so you can relish the novelty of being in the city.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wished I had received when I first arrived.

Secure your accommodation

Prevent high hotel bills by organizing your living arrangements early. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the prime options get snatched up quickly. Search for housing close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes to your morning classes.

Essential life admin tasks

Once you’re in London, tackle these necessities without delay:

  • Money transfers – as an overseas student, find a trustworthy and budget-friendly method to move money from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – acquire one swiftly to guarantee you have data for navigation in unfamiliar areas.
  • Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer quick setup and cater to students. Open an account for day-to-day expenses and part-time wage deposits.
  • Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.

The significance of the first week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is critical for your overall student experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover more than 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to join in. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society activities. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Smart travel in London

At first, I wasn’t familiar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet hectic venture. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for economical travel. Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover the city and find hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort zones

London can feel intense. Discover a comforting place, like a park, café, or bookstore, where you can relax and recharge. My go-to spots are a local park and the O2, where I de-stress with a movie.

Discover the city

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your favorite eateries. Explore iconic landmarks, complimentary museums, and enjoy the sights from a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from spontaneous excursions.

Final suggestions before commencing at Imperial

  • Bring a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket; umbrellas can be impractical in windy conditions.
  • Join unique events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Do not fret if you feel disoriented; it’s completely normal at first.

You don’t have to have everything figured out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus trip and Tesco excursion at a time.
