Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing
Stepping into London at first seemed daunting due to its size and rhythm. Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I had little direction. If you find yourself in a similar boat, there’s no need for concern. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating before your time at Imperial begins, enabling you to savor the city.
No matter if your arrival is weeks in advance or right before the semester starts, here’s what I wish I had known upon my initial arrival.
Secure Housing
Prevent expensive hotel stays by organizing your accommodation early. The prime choices disappear quickly, so aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes.
Managing Daily Tasks: Must-Haves
Address these key items as soon as you land:
- Money transfers – consider apps like Wise or Revolut for economical international transactions.
- UK SIM card – vital for navigation and staying connected.
- Bank account – digital banking options such as Monzo or Starling are speedy and favorable for students.
- Student ID card – crucial for gaining access to campus and availing discounts.
Your Initial Week at Imperial
The first week is essential for connecting with others and discovering over 350 clubs and societies. Participate in Welcome Week to establish a strong foundation for your academic journey.
Getting Around London
Obtain a Student Oyster card for reduced travel fares. While walking is fantastic for uncovering hidden treasures, the Tube and buses are effective for traveling longer distances.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can feel intense, so discover soothing spots like a park or café to unwind and recharge.
Discover the City
Get acquainted with local conveniences and visit iconic landmarks. Explore the city by going to museums, taking bus rides, and strolling around aimlessly.
Final Suggestions

- Purchase a waterproof jacket for those rainy days.
- Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t fret if you feel a bit lost at first; it’s completely normal.
You don’t need to have everything sorted out from day one. By reading this, you’re already ahead, so take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey.
