By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing
Stepping into London for the first time was a bit daunting with its enormity, noise, and rhythm. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I didn’t know where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London life before beginning your journey at Imperial, allowing you to fully embrace the newness of the city.
Whether you’re arriving several weeks early or just a short time before the semester begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.
Top Priority: Find Housing
To avoid costly hotel expenses, make your housing arrangements ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is as the prime options get snatched up swiftly. Try to find accommodation close to campus or conveniently near a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy travel times for early classes.
Crucial Life Admin
Once you arrive in London, tackle these essentials right away:
- Money Transfers – As an international student, seek an economical method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.
- UK SIM Card – Obtain a UK SIM card with data right away to efficiently navigate your new environment.
- Open a Bank Account – Some banks require a UK address, but online banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Set up an account for daily spending and potential work payments.
- Student ID Card – Secure this as soon as possible for access to campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts.
Imperial’s Important First Week
Your first week at Imperial is crucial. It’s the opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and engage in activities that spark your interest.
Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to get involved. I did, and I built meaningful friendships during campus tours and society events. This week lays the foundation for your university journey.
Efficient Travel in London
At first, I struggled to understand the Tube and bus system and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for cost-effective public transport travel.
Nonetheless, walking is a fantastic way to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
Initially, London can be emotionally intense. Locating a comfort zone can be advantageous. For me, it’s a close park where I go to unwind every day. My secondary spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I relax with a movie each week.
Discover your own comforting locations, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to assist you in relaxing and resetting.
Explore and Experience
Get to know the frequently visited areas around campus and your residence. Find your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining spots.
Check out iconic landmarks and dedicate weekends to exploring the city. Enjoy free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your happiest memories will stem from being a bit lost.
Final Advice for Starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to avoid charges for disposable bags in stores.
- Consider getting a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas often struggle against the wind.
- Participate in unique events for unforgettable moments.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented at first; this is a typical experience.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I launched my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
