Stepping into London for the very first time was quite an experience. The city appeared vast, bustling, and filled with energy. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself uncertain of where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, there’s no need to stress. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adapting to London before your journey at Imperial commences, allowing you to savor the vibrancy of your new city.

Whether you come weeks ahead or right before the term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish had been shared with me.

First priorities: secure your accommodation

To avoid costly hotel bills, arrange your living situation early. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. The prime options disappear fast, so seek a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for early morning classes.

Life admin: organizing the essential tasks

After settling in London, promptly tackle these essentials:

  • Money transfers – International students should consider affordable options for transferring money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Having data is crucial for navigating, so get a UK SIM card and data plan right after you arrive.
  • Bank account – Certain banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are swift and cater to students. Open an account for tasks and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – This is vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and securing student discounts. Obtain it as soon as feasible.

Your initial week at Imperial is the most significant

Your first week at Imperial is pivotal for shaping your student experience. Connect with your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, diving into your interests.

Even if you’re a bit reserved, challenge yourself to engage. I formed great friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society stalls. Your initial week lays the foundation for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

In my first week, I was lost with the Tube and buses, resulting in nine kilometers of walking across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for budget-friendly travel.

Walking remains an excellent way to soak in the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover your go-to spots

London can initially feel daunting. Identify a place that brings you comfort, like a park, café, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to unwind and refresh. My personal favorites are a local park and the O2, where I relax each week.

And remember to venture out!

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Pinpoint your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus for a scenic view. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from little adventures!

Final pointers before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life

  • Bring a reusable bag – many shops charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t fare well in the wind.
  • Embrace unusual events – they yield great stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience.

You don’t have to have everything sorted from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure, one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
