**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty as I prepared to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who has generally been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown was a daunting task. Now, as I look back on my first year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges faced, and memorable experiences. So, what insights has this year imparted, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

Among the most daunting elements of starting university was the challenge of forming new friendships. If you happen to be an incoming student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings of unease. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, I spent several hours retreating to my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly claim that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. These bonds have evolved into my second family, both within the university and my program.

What did this journey teach me? Taking that first courageous step is essential. Even if you’re not prepared to leap in immediately, that’s perfectly fine—numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to socialize will be available. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Tackling Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the academic pressures of university was another considerable challenge. The shift from A-level studies to university-level assignments was stark, and the change from the first term to the second was even more daunting. It’s common to feel overwhelmed or to question your capabilities, especially when you observe others thriving around you.

What aided me was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find a concept difficult to grasp, there’s a good chance others are facing the same issue. The essential lesson is to ask for assistance—whether it be from peers or faculty. Learning to seek help is arguably the most crucial skill you can acquire during your first year.

### The Significance of Encouraging Staff

One of the highlights of my experience has been the outstanding support from the Materials department staff. They truly care about students’ success and consistently show understanding toward the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open channels of communication and provided an array of resources to help us navigate our difficulties.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had utilized it sooner. Becoming a year well-being representative was among the best choices I made. It enabled me to cultivate connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, getting acquainted with the staff is something I strongly advocate. Utilize the support available—you can never have too much!

### Insights Gained

In retrospect, this year has revealed to me that many of the anxieties I held—both prior to and during university—were baseless. With a wealth of support from the faculty and fellow students, I discovered that I was never genuinely alone. More significantly, I learned how to balance the demands of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It has taught me the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone, seeking assistance when needed, and embracing the opportunities that surround me. For anyone about to embark on their own university journey, my guidance is straightforward: take that leap, be authentic, and remember—you’re never truly alone.
