**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new adventure was quite intimidating. Reflecting on the past year now, I recognize it has been a period of transformation—teeming with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was the process of making connections with new friends. For many incoming students, this aspect can be one of the most daunting parts of college life. On my initial day in university housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve built some of the most rewarding friendships—friends who feel like my second family.
What led me to this achievement? It began with simple actions, such as engaging in light-hearted conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same fears as I was. I discovered that taking early risks in social situations is vital. If you aren’t ready right from the start, that’s alright—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Above all, I learned that being authentic is the best approach to connect with others. With such a varied community at Imperial, you will undoubtedly encounter people who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Adapting to the Academic Demands
Another significant challenge was acclimating to the heightened academic demands and the rigorous material. The leap from A-levels to university was profound, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel inundated or question your competence when witnessing others studying and pondering your own abilities.
What assisted me in navigating this transition was the awareness that everyone else is experiencing similar struggles. If you find it difficult to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The secret lies in seeking assistance—whether it’s from classmates or academic staff. Mastering the skill of requesting help may be the most crucial tactic to hone in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and support personnel genuinely desire for their students to thrive and show understanding towards the challenges we encounter. They keep communication channels open year-round and are always prepared to tackle any concerns.
Even though I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until the year’s end, I regret not utilizing it earlier. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative was among the most beneficial choices I made. It allowed me to cultivate relationships with faculty, which proved priceless. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these options. The support offered is designed to help you flourish—don’t hesitate to take full advantage of it!
### Key Lessons from My First Year
Looking back, this year has imparted significant wisdom. The anxieties I felt prior to starting university, and even throughout the year, were often unfounded. With the abundant support available—from faculty to fellow students—I’ve realized that solitude is a myth.
Moreover, I’ve learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and submissions while also finding joy in my experiences. University is a period of growth, and although it brings hurdles, it also presents infinite opportunities for joy, connection, and self-discovery.
To anyone poised to embark on their university adventure: take that courageous step, embrace the support surrounding you, and most importantly, savor the journey.
