**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A mere ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed with anxiety, dread, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was set to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, entering this new phase felt like plunging into deep waters. Now, reflecting on an academic year full of development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve gained and how far I’ve progressed. So, what insights has this year provided, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was the process of making new friends. For numerous incoming students, this is a primary concern about commencing university, and I fell into the same category. On my very first day in student accommodations, just before classes commenced, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to step outside and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly proclaim that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. These relationships have evolved into a sort of second family for me, both within my program and throughout the university.

What did I take away from this situation? Firstly, it’s vital to take that crucial first step. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease initially, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others who are in similar positions. Secondly, the best approach is to simply be yourself. With such a varied student community at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Another notable challenge was the adjustment to the increased workload and the heightened difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re keeping pace.

What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re finding something hard to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The essential aspect is to reach out for help—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Learning to ask for assistance may be one of the most invaluable skills you can cultivate during your initial year.

### The Importance of Supportive Faculty

On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely desire for students to succeed and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept an open line of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance. Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a courageous step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are various ways to establish relationships with the staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway here is to leverage the support systems available to you—more help is always beneficial.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt before starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unjustified. With a vast array of support resources from both staff and fellow students, there is no need to confront challenges in isolation. This year has taught me that I’m never truly alone and that it’s feasible to enjoy university life while managing the pressures of exams and deadlines.

As I get ready to transition into my second year, I feel thankful for the growth, connections, and insights that this first year has provided. To anyone about to begin their own university experience: take the plunge, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to seek support. You can do this!
