**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been timid and introverted, stepping into the unknown felt incredibly intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year marked by personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can contemplate what I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the prospect of forming friendships. If you’re a potential student, this may resonate as one of your primary concerns as well. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had—individuals who feel like a second family.

What shifted? It began with casual conversations and realizing that everyone else was experiencing similar feelings. I learned that taking an initial leap of faith is essential. If you’re not prepared to jump in immediately, don’t worry—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I found that being genuine is the best strategy. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to discover individuals who connect with you.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the demands and complexity of higher education content presented another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the progression from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when you observe others studying diligently and succeeding.

What assisted me in navigating this was understanding that I wasn’t alone. Everyone encounters difficulties at some point, and if you’re struggling with something, there’s a good chance that others are too. The crucial point is to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty members. Learning to ask for help is possibly the most valuable skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

Regarding support, the staff in the Materials department have been outstanding. They truly care about students’ success and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our questions and providing advice.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support options until the year’s end, I wish I had engaged with them sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it emerged as a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which has proven invaluable. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My greatest lesson? Make the most of the available support systems—you can never receive too much help!

### Insights Gained

This year has shown me that the trepidation I experienced prior to embarking on my university adventure—and even throughout the year—was often misplaced. With abundant support accessible from both staff and fellow students, I recognized I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and laughter, and I have developed in ways I never envisioned.

If you are about to start your own university adventure, remember that feeling uncertain is perfectly normal. Embrace the challenges, make connections, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. You’ll emerge stronger, more self-assured, and with treasured memories for a lifetime.
