**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was consumed by nerves, apprehension, and ambiguity regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had previously been shy and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar felt daunting. As I look back at the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and memorable moments. So, what have I gleaned, and what is my current position?
### Confronting the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. For numerous incoming students, this represents a substantial source of anxiety, and I was no exception. On my first day at the student residence, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. These connections have evolved into my second family, both within my program and throughout the university. It began with casual conversations and bonding with individuals who shared similar circumstances.
What did I take away from this experience? Taking that first leap of faith is essential. If you’re not yet prepared to jump in headfirst, don’t fret—there are a multitude of ice-breaking events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to find people who connect with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was marked, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to find yourself feeling overwhelmed or questioning your capabilities, especially when you observe others appearing to excel.
What guided me through this period was the recognition that everyone is in a similar situation. If you find yourself struggling with a concept, there’s a good chance others are as well. The essential thing is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Learning to seek help is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Importance of Supportive Staff
A highlight of my experience has been the exceptional support from the Materials department staff. They truly care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our issues and providing direction.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Taking on the role of a well-being representative was a significant step for me, but it turned out to be one of the most fulfilling choices I made. It enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the available support—you can never have too much help!
### Insights Gained
This year has revealed that the apprehension I felt before and during university was frequently unfounded. With the extensive support offered by both staff and fellow students, I was never truly solitary. I learned to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and excitement.
In retrospect, I recognize how far I’ve progressed—not just in academics, but in personal growth as well. Starting university may feel daunting, but it also presents a chance for growth, connection, and exploration.
