**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was engulfed in feelings of anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been rather shy and introverted, plunging into unfamiliar territory was daunting. Reflecting on the past year now, I recognize it as a period rich with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I garnered from this journey, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was the pursuit of friendships. For numerous incoming students, this typically ranks as a primary worry about commencing university, and I was no different. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the official start of classes, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both within my program and across the university—have come to feel like a second family. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and striking up casual conversations with others who were navigating similar feelings.
So, what’s the takeaway? I learned that taking bold steps early on in the year pays off. If you’re not quite at ease or ready, there’s no need to fret—numerous ice-breaker events and chances to interact with fellow students are available. Most crucially, I discovered that authenticity is vital. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge was acclimating to the course load and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was palpable, and the surge from the first term into the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities when witnessing others studying and apparently thriving.
What aided me in overcoming this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar sentiments. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely others are too. The essential element is to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty. This is arguably the most vital lesson I learned during my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for support.
### The Value of Support and Connection
Speaking of support, the faculty within the Materials department are phenomenal. They truly desire students to succeed and show genuine empathy towards the challenges we face. Throughout the academic year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and offering direction.
I didn’t fully embrace the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which proved immensely beneficial. There are myriad ways to connect with faculty, and fostering these connections can significantly enhance your university experience. My greatest insight? Fully utilize the support resources at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced—both before beginning university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. Numerous support systems are in place, ranging from faculty to fellow students, to assist you in maneuvering through challenges.
This year has demonstrated that I am never alone, even when situations become overwhelming. It has taught me how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment. Most significantly, it has affirmed that stepping outside your comfort zone can catalyze profound growth and create unforgettable memories.
If you’re on the verge of beginning your university adventure, rest assured that feeling nervous is completely normal. Yet, also understand that you’re entering a space brimming with opportunities for learning, growth, and connection. Embrace the leap—you will not regret it.
