Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly timid and introverted self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current situation?

One of the foremost and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are reading this as an incoming student, it could be one of your primary worries. On my inaugural day moving into my accommodation, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day confined to my room, feeling too intimidated to step out and meet others. However, I can now assert with confidence that I have made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others experiencing similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not fully prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking occasions and events to assist you in connecting with others. I’ve also learned that if you can embody one quality, it’s to be yourself. With so many diverse individuals within the course and university, you are sure to encounter people akin to you.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be tough on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me get past that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same journey. If something confounds you, I can almost assure you that others are grappling with it too. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely wish for you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – at the beginning of the year, I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly among the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this element of university life is to leverage the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased by the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to have fun while managing stressors like exams and deadlines.
