Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most frightening parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be a significant worry for you. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just before the term commenced, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to step outside and meet others. However, today I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what has been my takeaway? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events to assist you in connecting with people. I also realized that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse group of people across the course and university, you’re sure to find others who share your interests.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me during this period, one being the reminder that everyone is facing the same challenges. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others find it confusing as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with faculty members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My main insight from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be eased with the support offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amid challenges such as exams and deadlines.
