Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly introverted and cautious self was used to. Looking back now, I perceive a year abundant with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an aspiring student reading this, it may be your greatest concern. On my inaugural day of moving into my residence, just days prior to the semester starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Yet, as I sit here today, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with a bit of casual conversation with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I glean? I discovered that it’s always advisable to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, no need for concern! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities and events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be genuine. With such a diverse group of people across the course and university, you’re guaranteed to encounter like-minded peers.

A further challenge was the academic workload and complexity of content. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in many respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can undermine your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few things assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same situation. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that there are others who are similarly puzzled. So, seek assistance. This may be the most critical lesson to absorb in the first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps before – I did take one at the year’s beginning by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is immensely valuable. There are ample opportunities to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the most beneficial choices you can make for yourself! My principal takeaway from this facet of university is to make the most of the support provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the support options available from staff and fellow students. It’s taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has revealed to me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
