Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year scholar. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I realize this past year has been filled with significant personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! But what insights did I gain, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it could be a major worry. On my initial day of moving into my residence, just days prior to the start of the term, I spent that entire day confined to my room, far too apprehensive to step outside and meet others. In contrast, I can now assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what has been my takeaway? I grasped that taking a risk at the onset of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or at ease, do not fret! Numerous ice-breaking events are available to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that being authentic is vital. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who share your mindset.
Another hurdle was the academic workload and level of difficulty in the content. There was decidedly an escalation from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Existing in such an atmosphere can destabilize your confidence; witnessing others study may leave you feeling inferior. Several factors helped me navigate this, one of which was reminding myself that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp something, I can nearly assure that others are, too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp during the first year. Request help from fellow students and faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the difficulties that students encounter. They show understanding and maintain an open line of communication regarding our challenges. I did not fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I’d utilized it earlier. I referred to taking risks – I took one by becoming a year-long well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best advantages you can secure for yourself! My primary takeaway from this is to make the most of the assistance provided. There’s no such thing as too much help!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the resources available from faculty and students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to have positive experiences despite pressures like examinations and deadlines.
